Lymphedema Exercise

Active.

Exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight are very important tools in lymphedema management and even lymphedema prevention. The effect of increased breathing, increased blood circulation, and the pumping effect of muscles and joints play a major role in the assistance of the return of lymph by increasing lymphatic flow.  It is suggested that a compression garment is worn during exercise for those at risk of lymphedema and is necessary for those who have lymphedema. One excellent source of activity is swimming- the hydrostatic pressure of the water can be compared to wearing full body compression. It is important when exercising with lymphedema that you start slowly and increase very gradually so as to not overwhelm your body. Consult with your physician if you have any concerns with beginning an exercise routine or for assistance for sensible weight loss advice.
